Transcribing George Floyd's brother's interview
Here is an interview done for ABC with Terrance Floyd, the brother of George Floyd, who was murdered by police in Minneapolis, sparking days of rioting all over the United States.
In his interview, he tells people not to **** up the country.
Q: Is there any way to describe what the last week has been like for you?
Terrance Floyd: I’m still numb about it. I’m seeing it, and coming to realisation that that’s my father’s namesake. I lost my father and I lost my brother. I just had to come. I was on a zoom meeting with my family and I told them and I said: “I have to go there”. Of course they had the pros and cons, but they were a little nervous and said: “Do it”. We’ve got family in North Carolina and we’ve got all these people who can’t make it, and once I got the OK, the spirit of my brother told me to do it.
I’m outraged too. At times I feel angry. I wanna bust some heads too. But my brother was not like that. My brother was about peace. He was a ‘gentle giant’. When you see him coming you’ll say: “Whoa. That’s a big dude”, but when you talk to him you’ll realise he’s about positivity and motivation. I just can’t believe he’s gone. I just had to come down here and speak to people and let people know: ‘Just channel your anger elsewhere. Don’t tear up your town, because if his own family and blood aren’t doing it, then why are you? If his own family are are going about it and going another route to seek justice, then why are you out here tearing up your community. Because when you finish and turn around and you want to go buy something, you messed up your own living arrangements. Just relax. Justice will be served.
Q: Are you afraid that the message is getting lost because of all this?.
Terrance Floyd: Yessir, I am. I feel that it’s more anger and [people are saying] ‘We’re gonna take this’, and combining it into one and it’s getting crazy. You got London [sighs, breathes heavily]. I know my brother, and he knew people. He was well-known in the community. He was famous – not famous like that – I didn’t want him to be famous like this. Be known for what you [were] known for – motivating people. I just put up a clip on Instagram, where he’s talking about getting back to working out and he’s talking about working out, he's motivating people. Do something positive, stop making excuses. They are using this as an excuse to be stupid.
Q: One officer was charged with 3rd degree murder and the others weren’t charged at all.
Terrance Floyd: I want them to get punished to the full extent [of the law] for what they did to my brother. When I saw the videos, not only was the dude on his neck, not only were the officers behind the car on him, so he [couldn’t] more.
Q: Is third degree enough?
Terrance Floyd: No, because if I recall in all the other cases, someone was arrested and they were charged. But there was no justice. They got off with a slap on the wrist. [I don’t want them] to get out until my son is grown and has a wife and is married.”
